Course Overview

The PPE in Manufacturing and Engineering Course helps learners understand PPE selection, machinery and industrial hazards, respiratory and hearing protection, correct fitting, inspection and safe equipment use. The course is 100% online, CPD Certified and worth 3 CPD points.

The PPE in Manufacturing and Engineering CPD course provides essential knowledge and awareness of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) used to help protect workers from workplace hazards commonly encountered in manufacturing, engineering, production and industrial environments. Employees in these sectors may work around machinery, moving equipment, sharp materials, hazardous substances, dust, fumes, noise, heat and flying particles. Appropriate PPE can play an important role in reducing exposure to these hazards when used as part of an effective workplace risk-control strategy.
Why this Training Matters for your Organisation
Providing staff with appropriate understand why PPE is important, when it may be required, how to select and use appropriate equipment, and how PPE should be inspected, maintained and stored.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain why PUWER guarding, interlocking and local exhaust ventilation must precede personal protective equipment in any manufacturing control decision.
  • Identify who is owed PPE free of charge in a manufacturing workforce, including limb (b) workers brought into scope by the 2022 amendment.
  • Select eye, face and hearing protection for a stated machining, welding or process task using impact grades, filter shade numbers and measured noise data.
  • Apply attenuation data and real-world derating to a hearing protection decision, and evaluate the risk of over-protection.
  • Distinguish the hand, foot, body and skin protection needed for cut, abrasion, puncture, heat, molten metal, chemical and static hazards, including where gloves must not be worn.
  • Justify a respiratory protective equipment specification for welding fume, metalworking fluid mist, wood dust or flour dust, including face fit testing and facial hair control.
  • Evaluate the storage, cleaning and laundering controls that stop process contamination leaving the site on clothing.
  • Apply PPE management duties to shift handover, agency and temporary workers, and night-shift supervision.

Assessment
